National Bikini Day
July the 5th; a date for your diaries ladies as it’s officially national bikini day! Whether you’re going to be in swimwear sunning yourself on holiday, chilling in your garden at home or at work (boo!), everyone can celebrate this day dedicated to the bikini! It’s pretty obvious that if you are lucky enough to be on hols on July 5th, wearing a bikini won’t be too much trouble. And if, like us, you’ll be in the office, why not wear a bikini under your clothes or get a group of friends together and go swimming in the evening?
The oh-so pretty swimsuit that feels as though it has been around forever was actually only invented sixty-odd years ago, by designer Louis Reard in 1946. It was first modelled in Paris, with the bottom half initially being a G-string pant (and how glad we are that things have moved on since then!)
Rumour has it that the bikini was created because of ‘hot weather’ and older swimsuits not being breathable enough, the designer’s choice to show tummy was a pretty big deal because before this, swimsuits had been two-pieces, covering women (and men’s!) bodies. And aren’t we glad he took the plunge and designed it!
Did you know…?
Reard chose to name the swimsuit, ‘bikini’, after an island in the Pacific. The word translates from the island’s own language as ‘Pikinni’ – ‘Pik’ means ‘Surface’ and ‘Ni’ means ‘coconut’. So, thanks to the talented Mr Reard, wearing one of our favourite swimwear pieces literally means…coconut surface!
We’re not so sure about this nickname, although you can kind-of see where he was going with this… With this in mind, bikini lovers, it’s time to embrace this official celebration and update your swimwear selection. What perfect timing too – if you’re off on holiday there’s no better time to bag yourself a new bikini! And, if anyone questions your sudden spree – you’ve got a great excuse; it’s a national day of celebration, don’t you know?!
Now, we couldn’t possibly say what our best bikini look this year has been (there’s too many!), but some firm favourites this season have got to be the bandeau fit, nautical inspired swimwear, and of course, busy florals. So whatever you’ve fancied this year, it’s definitely time to take it to the checkout.
With only a couple of weeks to go before we embrace this national celebration, girls, there’s only one thing for it – get your coconut surfaces on!
